Jan. 10           Counted and turned over the Sheep to Robt. And William  Adams, the

Sheep on the Rancho at Oak Lawn.  The number are as follows Viz Ewe Flock 1670, Ewe Lambs 300, Wedders 648, Wedder Lambs 300, Grade Bucks 5, Flock at the House:--Fine Ewes 17, Pets 10, Full-blood Bucks 15, Grown She Goats 27, Kids 15, Billy 1, Making a Total of 3008.

 

Jan. 14            Left the Rancho for Johns with the Family and what things I could bring in

the Wagon.  Got down just about dark.

 

Jan 15             I left for Corpus Christi.  Called at the New School house on the Hill.  Saw

Christopher Dunn who asked me to work for him at the School.  I started for him on Thursday 17th and boarded at Rankins until Saturday 19th.  On Monday following, I had to go to the Shop where I made 1 Kitchen Table 6 ft. X 37, Round table 3 ft. 6 in., and repaired 1 Mahogany Table for Mr. Micks , 3 Tables for the teacher in Father Garnards’ School, and put an office desk together.  Then went back to the School and Worked until Saturday, the 2nd of Feb.  Boarding at Mr. Hughes.

 

Feb. 4              Commenced Work for the Smith house and Store and worked there 8

weeks (except 11 days I was off Sick) up to March 30th.

 

April 1             The District Court met.  I was summoned on the Grand Jury.

 

Feb. 14            Rented a room and Kitchen of Dennis Kelly. The Family came

down on the 20th.  Bought a lot of L__?__ M­­__?__.  While on the Grand Jury, I got lumber out for a House which I have built.  Got moved into it on Saturday, the 4th May, although the House is not finished.  On the 16th & 17th of April, I worked for Mr. Robertson 1 ½ days.

 

May 12           Commenced on Mr. Robertson’s house in the evening.  Cut out the

Rafters.

 

May 13           Two young men from Pensacola started with me.  Worked Tuesday,

Wednesday & Thursday.  Friday morning was wet and no work was done.  On Saturday morning, they were discharged and Fisher came and started about the middle of the fornoon.

 

May 20           (Monday)  Fisher  and I at work on Robertson’s House.

Twins was buried today.  The other one very sick.  Lizzie has gone to sit with it all night.

 

June 15           Billy Adams  came in with Mr. Dodson.  They brought in

                        the Wool 3330,

which we had stored at Mr. Headen s.

 

June 20           Mr. McKenzie in Town to-day.  Fisher and I still at work

                        at Robertsons.

 

June 22           Finished at Mr. Robertsons yesterday.  To-day have been fixing the

Windows in our own House.

 

June 24           Got some Lumber from Mr. Headens for doors and Fence.

 

June 27           Commenced work at Mr. W. Headens House on the hill.  Had a heavy

rain.

 

July 10            Finished the inside work at Mr. Headens house.  Stopped working until

                        the Painting is finished.

 

July 14            Reverend Mr. Dobbs, the new Episcopal Church minister, preached in the

Methodist Episcopal Church.

 

July 22            Commenced with the Gallery of Mr. Headens House on the Bluff but got

nothing done, as I could not get the Lumber hauled up to it.

 

July 23            Got started this morning with the Gallery for Mr. Headen.

 

July 24            Mr. Williams  told me this morning that Andrew Fisher

                         was very sick. 

Also of a number of others who has lately taken sick. On the 3rd of this month, a Mr. Snider died at Teigler s Hotel of Yellow Fever.  He came here sick from Indianola.  At the time the Yellow Fever was so bad at that place.  I am of the opinion that that was the cause of this sickness, here, as it has spread on all side but as yet no other deaths.

 

July 26            Last night I called to see Andrew Fisher and stayed all night

                        with him. 

About ten o’clock I was informed that Mr. Drinkard was dead.  He has been long sick of Dyspepsia but the cause of his death was the bursting of a blood vessel.

 

July 27            The Rev. Mr. McPhail died yesterday.  A Methodist Episcopal Minister

who came here a month or 6 weeks ago.  This was the first death by Yellow Fever where the infection has been caught here.  Mr. J. N. Morgan died today.

 

July 28            Today Mr. Perry , Mr. Sterne, and a Pole (name unknown)

 

July 30            H. H. Eastwood (an Englishman from Manchester and a partner in a

                        dry goods store here)

Scott, Mrs. Clark, Christopher Dunn (husband of Mrs. Dunn & brother of Pat Dunn who died on the 6th & 7th) James Rankin , F. J. Cromer, Frank Stillman, H. Fisher, Rebecca Hughes (child), Theo. Mr. Lawrance (painter)

Aug. 9th:  James Gibbs , Ben Gibbs, Mrs. Hughes (sister of the Gibbs and Mother of the child who died on the 8th)

Aug. 31.  F. Ridder, Owen Clymer (brother of Sam Clymer who died on the 5th) Gregory Headen, McFarlane, Miss A. on the 6th & 8th) Jos Dunn (another son of Mrs. John Dunn) Mrs. M. Ridder (wife of F. Ridder who died on the 9th) J. M. Myers, G. A. Ludewig (husband of Mrs. Ludewig who died on the 11th), infant of Dr. J. F. Johnston, Michael Whelan, Mrs. J. Whelan.

Aug. 14th:  John Gallahan , Renaldo Allen, child of Wm. Ashton, John Whelan (husband & brother of those who died on the 13th)

 

Aug. 15th:  Mr. Vetter  (son of Mrs. Vetter who died on the 11th, Mrs. Doorly, Wm Norris, Augustine Haulthaus , Nascerio Morales, Dora Cody, Jos Egan.

Aug. 16th:  Mrs. Garner , Matthew Lewis, Sarah Lewis (Mother, Son & Daughter), F. Attion , John Henry Moore (died of cancer), John Kelly (husband of Mrs. Keely who died on the 10th)

Aug. 17th:  Joseph Hagan , Mrs. Howard, Mrs. Helen Evans, Mr. Toomy, Henry Armstrong, Beatris Chaleron, John Ludewig (Father of G. A. Ludewig who died on 13th)

Aug. 19th:  Mrs. Smith , Augustus Moore (Druggist who came in from the Country to De Ryee s Store)

Aug. 20th:  Son of Mrs. Meuly  (brother of George Meuly who died on the 10th), Bridget Fernisa , Child of Mr. Beasley, Rev. I. P. Perham (his death is a severe loss to the Community.  He was President of the Howard Association and made himself every way useful in visiting the Sick, Burying the dead.  He belonged to the Methodist Episcopal Church and was one of the very best Preachers that I have heard here), A. Weir.

Aug. 21st:  Antonio Salascar, A German (name unknown) Ralph Gregory, Fenega Chabeai .

Aug. 23rd:  Frank Clark  (son of Mr. Clark who died on the 8th)

Aug. 25th:  W. W. Worrell  (about 3 or 4 weeks before his death, he had 2 Brothers murdered at John Dix ’s Rancho, on the Ramerina Creek, about fifty miles from Corpus Christi.  They were murdered by their own Shepherds), Susan Headen, Christiana Perham .

Aug. 26th:  James Wallace , child of Mr. Beasley, Mr. Stone (son of Mr. Stone who died on the 11th) Mrs. Matthew Dunn.

Aug. 27th:  Peter Parker , infant of J. B. Mitchell

Aug. 28th:  Child of Mat Dunn s

Aug. 29th:  Child of the late James Ranahan, Rev. Mr. Misuleaurt (a Roman Catholic staying with Father Gonard)

Aug. 30th:  A Frenchman (name unknown) There has been no deaths today.

 

Sept. 1             Today there was one death of a Mexican, Ysidro Casas .

 

Sept. 3             Another Mexican, Jesus Gonzales.

 

Sept. 5             Rev. J. Gonard, the Roman Catholic Priest, at his place.  He was a native

of France and about forty years old.  He was very much devoted to the cause of Religion and Education.  He has gone to his grave, deeply lamented.

 

Sept. 6             Ruperta Garza  (a Mexican)

 

Sept. 7 & 8     No deaths

 

Sept. 9             Perry  Doddridge’s Child - 4 years old.

 

Sept. 10           Samuel McComb.  I think he died of Cholera of ­­__?__.

 

Sept. 14           Since the 10th [44]inst. There has two Poles and one Mexican died.  I

do not know there names.  Number of deaths to date, 133.

 

Sept. 17           Edwin McLaughlin  died today of Yellow Fever

 

Sept. 21           Saturday Morning, we had [45]an increase in family this Morning, about six

o’clock.  A girl.  No more deaths since the 17th.

 

Sept. 22           I hear this morning, that F. Mussett died yesterday night.  Lizzy going on

well.

 

Nov. 13           I have seen a  letter today from Mr. Jenkins about “the lot” adjoining

                        ours.

He is quite tired of [46]Gollegs trifling concerning it and tells Wm. Headen  to close the bargain with me at 123 Dollars.
