Feb. 15            Went to Mr. Shaeffers.  Was treated in the kindest manner that ever I

experienced.  Mrs. Shaeffer  was remarkably kind and Mr. Shaeffer offered the Burnt Ranche to me to lamb my Sheep.  I think he has a good place but he must have expended a great deal of money.

Feb. 16            Started about 3 o’clock for Mr. Jocelyn’s old Ranche.  Lizzy went with

                        me

about a mile & a half.  Before she got back, Mrs. Reynolds had been over and gone.  I went out to learn where John’s black pony was but got no satisfaction.  When I got home, Joe Buckow was here.

Feb. 17            Manuel took the Wagon and brought his family.  I went over to Mr.

Adamie and paid him $4500 for Manuel.  Joe Buckow started to seek his horse.  He went up to Mr. Shaeffer s and got back the same day.

Feb. 18           Joe Buckow  started to make a Tank.  Leona also started today.  Manuel

started with the Wagon for Corpus.  I started some time after with the Ambulance and catched up with him at the McMaster  Hollow.  Bismark was with him.  Mr. Reynolds had brought him and his tools to Mr. Adamies’ where Manuel got them, on his way to Corpus.  Immediately after I got up with them, Mr. Reynolds and his son came up after Bismark.  Bismark had taken a lot of [61]tricks and a glue pot away with him.  I went on to the Gourd Mott where I camped with Manuel.

Feb. 19            Started very early and got to the Motts long before sunrise.  Had the

Wagon axle fixed at Kinghorn ’s Shop.  Went on to Corpus and got the Wagon started out the same evening.

Feb. 22            Divide the Sheep and goats.  Put 1053 Sheep and lambs into the Ewe

flock.

Feb. 23           (Sunday)  Went to Mr. Shaeffer’s where I experienced the same

                          kindness

as before.  He saddled up and went with me nearly half way to the Pinetas.  I saw Mr. Stephenson and told him to let Phillippe’s Mother have half a bushel of Corn on the 25th and 10th of each Month, until I gave him notice to stop it.

Feb. 24            Phillippe came to the house about 9 o’clock and told us his Sheep had

gone off in the night.  All had went off to seek them.  Phillippe found them on the road between Adams and Reynolds.  The Ewe flock was taken over to the Agua Dulce by Nicholate and Philomene.  I went also and stayed through the lambing.  On the 7th of March, I tailed & mark 96 Ewe lambs and 104 Wedders.

On March the 11th, I tailed and Marked 136 Ewes and 142 Wedders.

(no date)         John that he had before.  I attended the Lodge.  Acted as Secr. Pro Tem. I

met with Mr. Campbell.  He went with me to the Lodge.  He told me that he sent word to me by Tom Wright to come on the 15th of this month for the Bucks.  And seemed a little surprized when I said that Tom had never told me.  Manuel got in about 11 o’clock on Tuesday but I did not see him until about 2 o’clock.  I loaded the Wagon with some lumber, doors, blinds and windows and got him started out a little before Sundown.  I attended a called meeting of the Chapter at which meeting Morris, Weil, and Sidbury were [62]exate.  Left Corpus about 10 o’clock on Wednesday morning and got home about ten o’clock at night.  I called at Mr. Adamies and he told me that my horse had come back and was staked on the road.  I brought him home.  Willie informed me that Monico had the Manada in the pen on Monday morning, the 7th.  After I left for Corpus, they marked 13 Ewe & 9 Wedder lambs.  They counted the Ewes (729)

April 12           Mr. Caldwell  called and informed me that he would leave on Monday.

He told me that there was not room on the Creek for a 320 acre Survey.  I started two

men this morning.  One of them I hired to cut Wood and the

other to drive the Wagon.  About 8 o’clock at night, I started for Corpus.  Got there about nine on Sunday morning.  John Dix had started up to Camp.  I left Corpus about 10 o’clock.  Had dinner at Mr. Wade’s.  Got home about 6 o’clock on Monday morning.

April 15           Went to Mr. Dix ’s Camp about 11 o’clock.  Went again after dinner.

Went with them, Surveying up the Creek.  Found there was only 10000 Varas each for Jocelyn and myself.  We agreed to divide.  We then went up the Carro to find whether the Mott I wanted was on government land or not.  Found that it belongs to Pablo Perez.

April 17           Made the other survey of 320 acres joining the North and East side of my

pre-emption and west side of Adams ’ and State Survey.  In the evening, I commenced with the house and raised one end of the framing.

April 18 & 19  Worked at the house, had Manuel to give us a lift.

April 20           Sunday:  Mr. Gallagher and his son in law (John Dolan)

                        called on their

way to San Diego, trying to sell a Black American Stallion.  After they left, I started for Mr. Shaeffer ’s Ranche to pay Monico [63]a/c.  Mr. Shaeffer has been shearing all last week.  Has shorn 2310 Sheep and has 27 ½ bags of Wool from them.  Mrs. Shaeffer gave me some Guinea Fowl eggs (17) and 4 Hen eggs.  They intend starting for Corpus on Tuesday, 22nd.

April 21           Worked at the house all day.  In the evening, Mr. Smith  came.

April 22           Still at the house.  After dinner, Mr. Smith drove Lizzie over to the Pinetas

to Stephensons Store.

(side margin) Found a Buck in the flock and altered it.

April 23          Mr. Smith  left after dinner for Mr. Reynolds.   I sent an

                       order for more

bags and burlaps, a barrel of the Best Flour, and a can of Sheep Dip to Gussets, to be brought up by Mr. Reynolds Wagon.  Commenced shingling the house today.

April 25          Mr. Smith  called again today.  He had met with Mr. James Grover

                        and

gone with him to the Precinios for some Sheep Mr. Grover had bought of Mr. Benton, who is living at Mr. McIntyres old Ranche.

April 26           The Roan mule is missing this morning.  Manuel has gone this evening to

the Ranche Minnettos, the mule not found.  John arrived here after Sundown.  Mr. Headen sent him out to collect.

April 27           John & Willie went over to the Agua Dulce for grapes.  I started to Mr.

Shaeffer’s to enquire about the shearers.  Engaged nine besides a cook and wool gatherer.  Got home just as John was starting for the Motts.  Wrote Mr. Campbell and sent the letter by John to be posted at the Motts.  The mule not found yet.

April 28           Started Manuel to the Amaragosa to enquire after the mule.  He did not

come back until late in the night.  No word of the mule.

April 29           Dorothea brought word he had seen the mule as he was coming home with

wood.

April 30           Willie went out and brought in the Roan mule.  Finished shingling the

house.  Went over to the Pinetas.  Brought beans and meal, a rope for Tabian.  Saw Theodore Dix and Sam Fusselman  at Mr. Reynolds’ Pen, as I come home.  I called for the flour, bagging, etc. that George Reynolds Junior brought from Corpus.  One of the Jacob boys was there.  Mrs. Reynolds told me how low old Ned Taylor was.  I went in and saw him.  It was easy seen that he was dying.

May 1             Manuel got mad about his mare.  Said he would not work any longer.

Monico got him to stay until Saturday.  I started a little before Sundown for Mr. Shaeffers.  I intended going round by Mr. Reynolds, to see how old Ned Taylor was but I could not find Mr. Shaeffers house, so I came home again.

May 2             Fred Franks  was here before breakfast this morning, to inform me that

George Reynolds uncle was dead.  I went over and made the Coffin.  While at work at it, Mr. & Mrs. Bryden  came.  The funeral took place about five o’clock.  Mr. Reynolds requested me to read the burial service, which I did.  Mr. & Mrs. Bryden promised to come over on Sunday.

per pair.  Sheared 393 Sheep & lambs (34 lambs).  George Reynolds, Jr. sent me a note this evening, not to let my Shepherd come there (to the Tecolote) to water my Sheep.

May 8             George Reynolds, Jr. Called this morning and told me that it was a

misunderstanding, about the watering of the Sheep.  He said we were to send them there to water as long as the water lasted.  Sheared 459 Sheep & lambs (54 lambs).

May 9             Sheared 507 Sheep & lambs (55 lambs).  Thomas Wright came over with

a Mr. Gibney who is buying Muttons.  He expects to come back about the beginning of June.  I did not promise to keep my muttons for him.

May 10           Finished shearing the Wedder flock (334).  Thirty of them were lambs,

making in all 2333 sheep and 267 lambs.  We had a misfortune in the pen, this morning.  Some of the Sheep got down and smothered a yearling Wedder, a yearling Ewe, and two Ewe lambs.  After finishing the Wedder flock, sheared 109 in the Manada.

May 11           Sunday:  Manuel came this morning with a note from Mr. Minter.  He

Pablo Perez’s Rancho.  Called there but could not get him as the Manada he is in had gone off for Water.

(side margin)   Counted the Goats 672.

May 15           I went over to Mr. Reynolds. John Fitch was there.  He

                        said Captain King

was sending 15,000 head of sheep to the Puerto.  I went over to the Pinetas to see if there was any water in the Creek.  There was none to do any good for Sheep.

May 16           Sent Monico to the Chicheroni Mott.  He says there is no grass.  I find he

would rather not go there.

May 20           Got into town by daylight.  Learned that Mr. Lovenskold is at Austin,

                        so I

did not see him.  Got up to the Motts where I stopped overnight.  Sarah had a letter from John from Austin.  Called on my way home at Mr. McIntyres and left 16 yd. Bagging which I brought from Gussetts for him.  Saw Monico as I crossed the Agua Dulce where he had brought all the Sheep and 10 Goats.

(side margin)  Got 824 from Mr. W. Beynon---long past due I think __?__ he wants me to put [65]blinds on  & the doors.

May 22           Sent Willie over to Mr. Reynolds with the bagging (20 yds) which I had

brought from Gussetts for him.  Also the gun caps and ten __?__ I borrowed 2 boxes of Lye and 1 Peck of Salt.  Made the bags with the 24 yds. bagging I brought from Gussetts.

May 23           Bagged the Wool.

May 24           Made another trough for the Well.  John Dix called today on his way

home.

May 25           Sunday:  Watered the Bucks at the Well this morning.  Lizzie, Willie and

Joe had gone to see Mrs. Fitch .

May 26           Watered the horses, bucks, and what Goats won’t drink at the Well.  I

started to make more troughs but was stopped by rain, coming a little before noon which continued until near night.  When Monico came and

said that Braharis was on a hill a little on the other side of the Tecolote Creek and Dorothea was not far from him.

May 27           I went out this morning on the bay horse to put the horses altogether.  The

little colt I got from Manuel, got into a Manada of F. Franks. Penned it at Adams ’ pen.  Tabian roped it and I led it over home.  I saw the flocks of

Dorethea and Braharis.  Commenced raining again just after dinner and the Creek flooded above and came down with such force that it broke the dam.  Monicos camp was flooded.  He took his things up to the kitchen and stayed there all night.

(side margin)  I engaged Tom Wright’s man and his brother, this morning.

May 28           Monico fixed two tents in the Shearing pen and moved over there this

morning.  We find there is about twelve (12) old Ewes dead.

May 29           Tomas Garcia  came this morning.  I sent him to work at the dam and went

over to see G. Reynolds about his little Wagon.  Saw Tom Wright and Bill Adams there.  They had been at the Pinetas’ Store.  When I go home I started to fix the Wagon to go for the Bucks.

May 30           Finished the Wagon but was prevented from going for the Bucks by rain.

The dam was again washed away.  In the evening the weather slowed up and I started with two window frames for the house.  Moved the grape vines up to the house.

May 31           More rain and the weather very unsettled.  Worked at the window frames.

June 1st           (Sunday)  Still more rain.  Mr. Stephens passed here this morning on his

way to the old Ranche of Cesereo Trevino with a flock of sheep from the precinios.

June 2 & 3      I worked at the window frames and put them in and also the sashes &

blinds, fixed the Joists and moved some of the wool to the East end of the house.

June 4             Started with Tomas for the Bucks.  Called at Mr. Reynolds for his

                        spring

Wagon.  Had to wait there about an hour as [66]James Compton had the Wagon down at Mr. Adams for Corn.  Saw Mrs. Reynolds at the Pinetas Store where I bought a Bushel and a half of Corn Meal, and left it there until my return.  Went on until I got between Stillwell and Pink McMasters where we stayed for dinner.  Just after we ate dinner, a tremendous rain fell.  After it was over, we hitched up and went on to Long Hollow where we were obliged to stop all night on account of the Creek being so high and running so strong.

June 5             Got an early start.  When we got to Spring Creek could not cross.  The

water from the River was backed up to the crossing and was between 5 and 6 feet deep.  Went farther up the Creek and crossed it at a Mexican Ranche.  Got to Mr. Campbells about noon.  After dinner Mr. Campbell went with me to see Mr. McKenzie .  There was no one at home but we went inside as it commenced raining.  They soon came home but we stayed there all night as Mr. Campbell thought we would not be able to cross the Creek near his house.

June 6             Started back to Mr. Campbells after breakfast and after we had seen

                        the

Goats which are too small to take from their mothers.  We loaded the bucks and started about 9 o’clock for home.  We crossed by way of the Williams Crossings and Tomas got bogged in Spring Creek at said Williams Crossing.  I got very well over with a little help from Tomas but we worked all day at the other Wagon and could not get it out.  When just about Sundown we put the bucks out and took them to Mr. Newberry.  After tying the Wagon to the root of a Mesquet bush, we penned the bucks at Mr. Newberry’s pen and camped there.  In the night came another heavy rain.

June 7            At day break, Tomas and I started on foot for the Williams Crossing.

                       We

travelled a long way out of the way but finally got there to find the current of the flooded Creek ha taken away both the Wagon and brush that it was tied to.  We took the Mules and went back to Mr. Newberry and made a cup of coffee.  After I took coffee, I started out to seek for the Wagon.  I went to the Crossing on the old road and found that the backwater from the River was about level with the bank of the Creek.  I went up the Creek seeking the Wagon after a great deal of trouble and difficulty, I found the wheels and axles on the banks of the Creek near some Mexican Jackals.  They had been got out of the Creek by three Mexicans who wanted me to pay them $20.00.  I continued my search for some time longer for the bed and rocking bolster but could not find them.  So I went & got Tomas and two Mules and took the Wagon away to Mr. Newberry and told the Mexicans to come there.  They came and I gave them four dollars among them.  I then had the one Wagon tied behind the other and came away about 5 o’clock.  Tomas driving the sheep and I the Wagon, with the rest of the animals tied behind.  In the way we arrived at Mr. Stillwells Ranche, very late in the night.

June 8            Found that Mr. Stillwell was not at home so we came on to the La Garte.

Just before we got to the Creek, we met Isino Thomas who was on his

way

up to Mr. McKenzies looking after his (McKenzies) bull.  We did not venture to cross the Creek but camped there and as we had neither supper or breakfast, I went up the Creek to buy some bread at a Mr. Barfield’s.  I got some corn bread which they did not take pay for.  Mr. Barfield is a blind man.  Soon after we had eat breakfast, John J. Dix came.  He crossed the Creek in this Ambulance on his way to the Ranche of his brother Olwyn, where his mother is now stopping and is sick.  Soon after Mr. Dix passed, Mr. Adams of Oakville came with an eight mule Wagon on his way home from Corpus to Oakville but he did not attempt to cross.  A little before SunDown there was quite an assemblage of people on the other side of the Creek from me.  They had come to witness the immersion of Mr. Lewis and Mrs. Or Miss McIntosh .  After the ceremony was over and the sun down the people dispersed and I went over to Mr. Pollan’s Store and bought some sugar & Coffee and soda crackers.

June 9             Mr. Adams , Mr. Lewis, and myself went to work clearing

                        away the Mud

from the crossing.  After working about two hours at it we got it made passable.  We then with the help of Mr. Stillwell ferried the sheep across the Creek and then crossed very easily with the Wagons.  When we got to the [67]Jackalite Creek, we were stopped again.  We now had a Mexican and his wife in another Wagon, accompanying us.  He was a shepherd for Fred Frank and George Reynolds and leaving Stillwells.  After waiting a considerable time the Water went down so that were able to cross the sheep.  But the Mexican got stuck in the crossing.  We helped him out and went on to the Pinetas Creek where we were again stopped.

June 10           After some trouble, we got the sheep across the Creek.  I called at Mr.

Stephensons Store for the Meal which he said was not good so he changed it.  I got it made out to two bushels and I came on to Mr. Reynolds.  Just when we got the sheep there, the rain came down again. So we left the bucks in Mr. Reynolds pasture and came on towards home with the one Wagon.  The Tecolote Creek was up but we were able to cross it with the Wagon without stopping.  But when we got to the Carro it was up too high to cross.  This Creek has never ceased running for over two weeks.  We loosed out the Mules and I crossed the Creek by way of a broken tree.  Got home after being very near a full week away.

June 11           Sent Monico over to Mr. Reynolds for the sheep.  Started Tomas and

his brother (who had started for me last Friday) on an ant bed.

June 12           After dinner to-day, I started Tomas over to Mr. Reynolds with the

Wagon.  Lizzie and I went over in the Ambulance with Joey and Robie and

borrowed a Barrel of Flour, a sack of corn, 17 lb. of sugar, and a packet of soda, which Tomas brought on the Wagon.  We met Thomas Wright, his wife and her two sisters there.  They were just leaving as we got there.  We got home just at dark.  Tomas would not stay, so I paid him $5.00 for a half month.

June 13           We cut out from the goats, this morning, 32 old she goats, 6 wedders, and

two kids and put them in the Wedder flock.  Garcia and myself went to work at the fence the rest of the day.

June 14           Cut out 131 Ewes which has no lambs from the Manada.  Put in 6 Bucks

with them.  Counted the Manada (2373).

June 15           (Sunday)  We put Remicio’s flock in the pen last night but it was so wet

this morning, we could not work at it.  So we put the 131 Ewes we cut out of the Manada with Remicios flock.  Went over to Mr. R.

June 16           Cut out the Ewes and lambs, Ewes in lamb, and some old Ewes from

Remicio’s flock.  Counted the flock (1186 including 5 Bucks).  When counting, Manuel (Mr. Reynolds [68]Bicuro) came and told us that Apollonio’s flock had gone off in the night (Georges & Freds) so I sent Monico to help seek it and Willie over to tell Mr. Reynolds.  I am now getting ready to start for Corpus.  Got Garcia started with the Wagon about ten o’clock.  I took an early dinner and started after him.  We got to Mr. Wades at dark.  Mr. John [69]Tymon and wife were there.  They had been water bound several days.

Sept. 13           There must have been a great quantity of rain up the Creek, as the water

has been higher here than I have ever known it before.  The dam is all washed away and a quantity of posts and fence board, that I expected was quite out of the way of the water.  There was some rain in the night but not much.  The pens were too wet to shear in .  Pablo Tabala brought 73 posts to-day.  Willie went over to the Agua Dulce with the Wagon but could not cross.  We put the earth round the Cistern but did not plant the grass on it.  We got all the posts we could find.  Dorothea, one of the men Monico brought, took Briceda’s flock to-day.

Sept. 26          Mr. McKenzie got here this morning before breakfast.  It appears he

                        got

lost last night and got to Mr. Wright s.  He brought $25000 for me to pay Mr. Sidbury when I go to Corpus.  He left again before dinner.  Commenced shearing the Ewe flock this morning.  Sheared 297.

night for the sheep and shepherds.  Monico says he never went to bed but was out among the sheep all night.  This morning, he found a little flock which we suppose were Stephens.  He put them in to Adams  pen about 10 o’clock.  He found a lot of about 250 up this creek.   They were Mr. Shaeffer’s.  He put them in our pen. They had not been long in the pen when the shepherd came and got them.  Monico and Willie have moved the camps of the 2 ewe flocks to the [79]Palo Waco and the Wedder flock to our Mott.  All the pet lambs got to the Wedder flocks early this morning but the two kids are not found yet.   Pablo Tabalo brought 50 Posts this evening.

Oct. 24            Joe, Remicio, and Robie got back about 1 o’clock to-day.  They left the

ambulance and Greg at Mr. Wade  so that he could bring Lizzie up when she is ready.  A Mr. Wilson came this evening with a herd of Cattle on his way to Mr. Culvers at the Penitas.  Penned his herd in our Corral.  In doing so, Bonifacio Tabalo, one of his men, got his leg broken.  I learn that Monico is drunk and had a row with the cattlemen.  It appears that Remicio brought liquor from Corpus.

Oct. 25            The Mexican they sent for the Doctor, did not get to Banquetti until this

morning about 8 o’clock.  Dr. Jeffries  and him got here to-day about 1 o’clock.  I assisted in bandaging the leg.  The [80]Cowdrivers are still here.  Joe did not work to-day.  He left this evening for the river and took 1 Bush. Corn over for Mr. Adamie.

Oct. 27            The Cow drivers left yesterday morning.  Joe did not get back until this

morning.  He started at the fence between 10 & 11 o’clock.  It appears that Mr. Bryden has been up at Mr. Reynolds.  Pablo Tabalo started one of his carts to Corpus today.  I expect he will bring me 1000 ft fencing.

Oct. 28            A Mexican called Pedro Gonzales brought Mr. Wade ’s

                        old Buggy here

today.  Joe and Remecio working at the fence.  Pablo Tabalo has not called to get the letter to take to Corpus.  He must not intend to bring any lumber.

Oct. 29            Pablo Tabalo  got the letter to-day.  He is hauling 6 sacks of Wool for

Stephens & Corbit.  He got an order for the freight on the lumber he has to bring for me.  Blonzel and his crowd passed here to-day on a cow hunt.  Remicio says he is going to the River on Friday.

Oct. 30            Lizzie and the children arrived this evening, quite unexpected.  Mr. Wade

brought them up.  It appears there has been quite an excitement in Corpus on account of the yellow Fever.  A man who came to Corpus from Columbus, died at Corpus last Saturday night.  And it is said that it was yellow Fever he had.  The report got to the Motts and Mr. Wade went down last Monday to bring them up but they did not leave until Tuesday.

Oct. 31            Remicio came today and got 25 dollars after his A/c was squared up.  He

says he is going to start for the Rio Grande tomorrow. Mr. Wade left again this morning in the buggy the Mexican brought on Tuesday.  He took old Charlie.

Dec. 11           Left Mr. McIntyres early and went by Mr. Wade’s old

                        house where Mrs.

Crossly now lives.  Passed Joe just back of Mr. Nickerson’s.. I got the two turkeys from him and took them to Mrs. Brydens.  She has bought the Durst tract of land.  I sold the goat skins to Mr. Headen at 28 cent per lb.  There was 162 lb. ($45.36) Could not get the Wagon loading this evening because there was no lumber suitable at Sidburys yard.  The Wagon has to go to the Wharf in the Rincon in the morning.

                        another night in Corpus.

Wade s old house.  While he watered the animals, I put the goats and other things on the Wagon.  I called at Mr. McIntyres with a letter from Mr. Bryden.  Got home about 9 o’clock at night.

Dec. 26           Lizzie, Joey and Willie started for Corpus this morning.  Sent a pair of

kids over to Mr. Adamis.

Dec. 27           I had another spell at Mr. Reynolds’ dipping box to-day but made very

day.  Worked at dipping box

San Diego to bury but I persuaded him off it.  I made the coffin for it.  I

promised Mr. Reynolds the [85]dipping box would be done on Tuesday

but I am afraid this will prevent me from finishing it by that time.

Dec. 30           Mr. Reynolds  and his Son George came this evening for the box but it

was not done.  We have arranged for them to come tomorrow about Seven o’clock.

Dec. 31           Mr. Reynolds  and Niclate got here about eleven o’clock.  The box was

hardly finished but we very soon finished it and got it loaded on his Wagon.  He got one flooring board (14 ft) to finish his platform and he borrowed my dipping box.  I sent a pair of Turkeys over.  He left the Cypress that remained.  I have been sadly disappointed that Lizzie has not come yet.  I fully expected she would have left Corpus on Monday, the weather was so fine.  Tuesday was not a fine day and I thought she might have staid at Mr. McIntyres all that day.  Today is such a very fine day I fully expected her.  On Tuesday she completed her forty sixth year.  After finishing Mr. Reynolds’ box, I cleaned up a little and made a fire with all the bones & rubbish.
