DIARY OF JOSEPH ALMOND

1875

Jan.1st, 1875   No dipping going on today on Account of it being New Years day and very

bad Weather.  Cesario Hernandez  recommended today.

Jan. 3rd            (Sunday)  Went over to the dipping place.  I was late and they had started

to dip one of Mr. Brydens flock.

Jan. 4              Dipped another flock of Mr. Bryden’s.  It was a very bad day.  Before

                        we

got through with it, Mr. Adamie  came with his flock.  As soon as Mr. Brydens flock was finished, he had his put in the pen.  By this time, the weather was getting pretty severe but Mr. Adamie had his flock dipped.  About dark, we got through and the Camp was broke up.  Adams & Wright have sent the Wagon for the things belonging to them.  I had Cesario with me to day helping.

Jan. 5              This being the day for Mr. Nickols Sale, I did not know whether to go or

not.  We have had such a severe night, every thing outside being completely covered with ice.  But I made up my mind to go to San Diego to the Sale and had fed the Sorrel horse.  But when Willie brought him to the house, he was dead lame.  I sent Willie for the Remuda but when he got back, it was 12 o’clock.  So I could have no chance to get to the Sale.

Jan. 6              Mr. Smith , the Sewing Machine Agent, called today.  He had Mrs. S.

Tinney with him. It was raining and would not stay.  He had stayed all night at Mr. Adamies.  He told me that Mr. Adamie had lost 10 head of Sheep from the cold after dipping.  It has been a very bad day.  Seems to be set in for a bad spell of Weather.

Jan 15             I sent Rafael, Juan & Cesario for Wood today.  We have got very little

done since the dipping.  There has been a great number of deaths among the Goats.  Three of the fine Billys have died.  I moved the Pastores to the Palo Hueco.  The bad Weather still continues although some better now then it has been .

Jan. 16            The wagon got back tonight about dark.  The roads are bad.

Jan. 17            Lizzie went over to Mr. Reynolds today but Mr. Thomas

had gone to the La Garta. [106]Mrs. Reynolds had a fine boy this

morning.  Lizzie brought 30 lbs of oats.

Jan. 18            I started the Wagons with a number of goat skins, a little after noon for  Corpus and

expected to start myself but the Bucks could not be found.  They had never been in the

pen last night.  Just at dark, the bucks came up by themselves.  Mr. Smith

came over this morning to see if I would carry Mrs. Thomas down but I

could not do it as I intend going on horseback.

Jan. 22            I got back about eleven o’clock last night form Corpus.  I started on

Tuesday, 19th, early in the morning.  I got up to the Wagons in Culvers Pasture.  I went on and left my horse at Mr. J. W. Dunns Pasture.  The Wagons were in early on Wednesday morning.  I got them loading (about half loads, the roads are so bad) and out to Mr. Dunn’s Pasture where they had stayed the night before.  I went back to town to settle my bills.  I saw Mr. Bailey and paid the subscription for the transcript.  I also paid Frank for the Gazette and [107]ordered my brand put in this paper.  I got out of Corpus about 2 o’clock yesterday evening.  Got some Umbrella China trees and cuttings of other trees at Mr. G__?__s.  I had a Moonlight night.  I passed the Wagons camped about half way between Mr. McIntyres and the Gourd Mott.  The Wagons got home this evening just about sundown.

Jan. 23            Planted the Umbrella China; a number of fig trees and all the cuttings of

figs, Mulberrys, Pomegranates & Cedars to day.  Had the Pastores in this morning.  Cut out Goats and counted 1575.  Tailed all assembled.

Jan. 24            (Sunday)  We had Jesus Uerta’s flock in the pen this morning and cut out a

few last Spring lambs and a few [108]Course Ewes.  Tailed all and counted 1105.  After we were through, we had the other Ewe flock in and cut out all the sheep that were tar branded and all the young lambs, all Mr. Wrights sheep, and counted 216.

Jan. 25            The ewes and lambs and yearling flock slept at the pens last night.  Had

them in the pen early this morning.  Tailed all that was not tailed before.  Cut out all belonging to Mr. Wright .  Tar branded all of them except about six. Counted 1099. After finishing with the Sheep, planted the [109]Eshalotes and part of the Irish Potatoes.

Jan 26             Finished planting Potatoes except one row.

Jan. 27            Got through planting.  Willie and Juan commenced plowing.  Cesario,

Perfecto, and I went to work setting Posts for the outside fence.  Towards night, I went over to the flocks on the other Creek.  Just as we were coming in to breakfast yesterday morning, Mr. Reynolds came up to the fence and with him Mr. Benton , Dolores Trevino and Geo Reynolds, Jr.

They were going after some Mexicans which had been gambling at Mr. Bentons camps.  About noon, Mr. Reynolds & the two Adams came back (Adams boys had followed him over to Mr. Jocelyns.)  Mr. Reynolds came in and told me they had got the Mexicans at John Jocelyn’s and Benton & Trevino had gone to San Diego with one.  The other is laying at Jocelyn’s.  He has been shot in the eye.

Jan. 29            Fred Frank, Geo. Reynolds Jr., Benton called here

                        yesterday morning.

They were on their way to Jocelyn s.  They had two Mexicans and Mr. Reynolds light Wagon with them and Benton had a Warrant to arrest the Man at Jocelyns.  I got ready to go with them.  Fred waited for me and the others went on to Jocelyn’s and found the rest of them there.  After waiting a long time, we went without the Man, Antonio Garcia.  Jocelyn said he, the Mexican, had been threatened with [110]lock-jaw.  We met Mr. T. Wright about four mules from San Diego with a few Wedder Goats which he said he had paid $100 per head for.   We reached San Diego about an hour before Sundown.  I met Steel, Redback & O’Leary there.  This morning, the trial of the Mexican which Mr. Benton and Dolores Trevino had taken to San Diego came off.  He will be sent to [111]Gaol until the Grand Jury be in Session as it was not likely he can get bail to the amount of $30000.  I met with Mr. Litel from Castroville at San Diego today.  He informed me that Wm. Harper had been dead for a long time.  He had moved to San Marcos and died there of Pneumonia.  Fred, Geo. & I left about 5 o’clock.  I got home about Sundown.

Jan. 30            I went over to the dipping place this morning.  Mrs. Brydens sheep were

finished.  Mr. Reynolds Bucks and Adams & Wrights Bucks were dipped.  I came by Mr. Reynolds house and brought the books & picture which he brought from Corpus.

Jan. 31            (Sunday)  I went over to Jesus Alanis’ Camp this morning and found that

we must cut out a Manada from his flock.  So I took Rafael and Cesario, Juan, Perfecto, and Willie with the Wagon.  We got as many out on the prairie as we could and took them and the flock to Palo Hueco.  We put the 11 fine bucks with Jesus Uerta ’s flock tonight.

Feb. 1              We had Jesus Alanis flock in this morning and cut out all the ewes and

lambs and put Perfecto with them.

Feb. 2              Had Jesus Uerta’s flock in this morning and cut out 53 ewes and all the

young lambs.  Lizzie went over to Mr. Reynolds with Robie and Bessie

to school this morning.  This has been the finest day we have had this year.

Feb. 3              Another norther blowing.  Robie and Bessie went to school but Robie

came home alone this evening; was too cold for Bessie.

Feb. 4              Still bad weather but Robie went to School again and did not bring Bessie.

Feb. 5              The Weather still continues bad.  Robie did not go to School today on that

account.

Feb. 6              Robie went over to Mr. Reynolds (the Weather being a little milder,

                        though

still inclement) to bring Bessie over.  John Jocelyn came over this morning with the Wheel barrow in his Wagon.  He made great apologies for account of the goat skins.  He wanted to know how much he owed.  I told him but he did not pay it.

Feb. 7              (Sunday)  Mr. Reynolds, Mr. Compton, and a Mr.

                        Lake  came over this

morning with the Wagon  They brought two ceiling boards for the black-board.  Mr. Reynolds  borrowed two sacks of Corn and about 8 Buckets of Oats.  He intended starting his Wagon to Corpus to-morrow.  Took the Bucks out of Juan Uerto’s flock.

I gave him an order on Mr. W. Headen  for $3000 dollars.

Feb. 10            Ceasario came home last night about seven o’clock on one of the horses

and told us that Juan had broke the Wagon tongue near the old Cesario Ranche.  I started on horse back with a lantern, it being a very dark night.  When I got to them, I had the six Mules hitched to the old Wagon and brought it home.  Got home at 2 o’clock this morning.

Feb. 11            Had the Manada in the pen and tailed the lambs, 99 ewe lambs & 103

Wedder.  Counted the ewes 302.

S. Ellif about the horse.  He said he wanted ride him into Corpus on Monday morning.  I went by Laureles where I arrived just about dark.  Messrs. Pierce & Carl were there.  They had got there about an hour before me and Captain Kenedy had not been long home from Corpus.

I left the Laureles about 11 o’clock and got to Corpus about dark.  On Monday morning I went to the Court House and was put on Petit Jury No. 1.  On Tuesday we got one case which was soon settled and Jury No. 2 got a case, State of Texas Versus Deavolon  which was given against Deavolon.  On Wednesday, Jury No. 1 was called and got the case of Wallace & Glover Versus W. W. Wright. Verdict for Defendant (this was a Hide case).   While listening to the evidence in this case, I saw Joe Buckow & Tom O’Callaghan come into Court and presented a paper to the Clerk, when Joe was sworn.  Soon after I saw Mr. McClane and he served a Writ of Habeas Corpus on Me & Wife.  I did not serve on any other case and on Saturday, I was excused and started my Wagons out about 2 o’clock.  About Sundown, I got started myself.  I got home about 5 o’clock yesterday morning and the Wagons have not got here yet.

Feb. 28            (Sunday)  The Wagons got home last Tuesday night.  Willie went out on

Monday morning and met them at the McMaster  Hollow.  Brought them over the Kinte Hollow and left them on Tuesday morning.  He went again and found them very little further on.  Juan had broke his Wagon tongue and they were just about to leave with one Wagon, leaving all the provisions etc on the other.  Willie left them on the Agua Dulce prairie but had to go back and seek them after dark.  About 8, Juan got here and the other about 10 o’clock at night.  Wednesday morning about nine o’clock, we all started in the Ambulance (except Willie) for Corpus.  We passed Reynolds’ Wagons a little above Mr. McIntyres Ranche and got in to Mr. Wade’s about 9 o’clock at night.  The trial came off on Thursday evening.  The Jury got the Case at dark and after being locked up all night, did not agree.  When it was left to the Judge and he would not declare the m__?__ Annulled.  We all started back again about 2 o’clock and got to Mr. McIntyres before dark and home about 1 o’clock yesterday.  Today we have been fixing the pens for lambing.

July 10            Willie went over to Adams this morning for the bucks but did not get them

July 11            (Sunday)  Mr. Piaget came with another man named Weed _?_, early this

67 Goats.  Counted Sabino’s flock 367 sheep, 5 Goats, 10 lambs.  Put the two flocks together and made a total of 1562 sheep and __?__  Spring lambs, 12 young lambs & 72 goats.  A Mr. Curtis  called this morning enquiring the way to Lagartaville.  He has been buying sheep at Concepcion and was on his way to Oakville to get his draft cashed.  He is from Misoure and intends taking his sheep on the Medina.  I intend starting for Corpus now to see Mrs. Bryden about the land.

July 19            (Monday)  I started last Friday for Corpus about 11 o’clock.  Went by way

of Mr. Wrights.  They wanted to see me about building a School.  I was leading Mr. Wades horse and Robie went over as far as Mr. Wrights with me.  I had an ugly job, leading the horse.  I got to Corpus about 11 o’clock at night.  On Saturday morning.  I went up to Mrs. Brydens and they sent out for Frank to come in and fix the conveyance of the land.  He did not get in until 3 o’clock.  We got all fixed and I left the deed with John to be recorded.  I saw John Dix and told him to call at Wm. Headen & Co. and get all the Currency belonging to me.  I also saw W. W. Chapman but he got nothing satisfactory from Mr. Stillman  yet.  I stayed at Mrs. Bryden’s all night.  Started yesterday morning about 8 o’clock.  I called at Mr. J. W. Dunn ’s & got some Watermelons & Tomatoes.  When I got within Scotts fence, I stopped a long time for the horses to feed.  I met Mr. Shaeffer in the pasture.  Got home about 12 o’clock yesternight.  This morning we have had the flocks in the pen counted and find that there is 120 sheep & Spring lambs sheep.  It is now eleven o’clock and I intend starting off to San Diego, as soon after dinner, as possible.

July 23            Monico and I started for San Diego last Monday evening.  Went by way of

Francisco Basquez’s but did not see or hear any account about the sheep.  We got to San Diego about nine at night.  On Tuesday, we looked round but did not get any Wedder Goats.  On Wednesday, we started for the Ranche San Jose with a note from Mr. Luby to Antonio Gonzales .  He had no Wedder Goats for sale.  He sent a man named Pedro Gonzales who took us to the Rancho de Refugio where I bought 80 Goats for meat for shepherds from Rafael Guterez and his Son in law, Santo Ynojosa.  We got them cut out early and got to San Diego about one o’clock.  I could not find Antonio but heard of Jesus Alanis working for Manuel Trevino.  One of the Goats could not travel so we killed it a little on this side of San Diego.  We got to the Muertocita by driving awhile after dark, penned the goats there.  One got away.  We got home early today.

July 25            (Sunday)  On Friday evening, Monico and I started for the Puerto the Agua

Dulce.  We looked in the King flocks on Saturday morning.  Saturday evening, I started back to San Diego.  I overtook Jesus Alanis  and took him to Mr. Luby’s.  He said if Manuel Trevino would not pay his a/c he wants come back to me and work it out.  This morning, I made enquiries for Antonio but could learn nothing of him.  I saw Mr. Humphreys  who told me he would keep a lookout for him.  I got home this evening about 3 o’clock, after coming by the Amaragosa to see Clemente.  I did not see him.

July 26            Willie started for the Amaragosa to see Clemente but met him coming here.

I fixed with him to commence shearing to-morrow morning, with all the shearers.

July 27            Commenced cutting out the lambs to shear.  We got 275 cut out when

Clemente & Juan Ynojosa came.  Clemente informed me that the rest of the shearers could not come.  So we quit cutting out the lambs & commenced shearing with Juan, Clemente, & Willie.  Jose Maria Ariano come when they had sheared the first tie down.  The lot sheared, 184 lambs.

July 28            Today they sheared 147 making 331 in all.  We dipped them and in the

evening, we dipped the McLane and Campbell bucks

and the 3 Billys.

July 29            We marked with the Tar brand all the Lambs shorn yesterday and Tuesday

and turned them into Braharis’ flock.

July 30           One of the McLane bucks got lost this evening.  I suppose he has got into

some of the flocks.  I must start to-morrow to San Diego to seek a shepherd as Jesus Guerta intends leaving.

Aug. 1             (Sunday evening)  I started yesterday evening for San Diego to seek a

Shepherd in the place of Jesus Guerta .  Luby  had one for me but I could hear nothing of Antonio.  Mr. Goodrich told me that it was very likely that he might have gone to the Rendalla, as he has some sons and daughters there.  I got the shepherd and left about five o’clock.  After we got out of San Diego, I took the Shepherd on behind me and travelled about five miles.  Then he got off and walked until he got on this side of the Chiltipin Creek, when he wanted to ride again.  So I allowed him to get on behind me.  As soon as he was on the horse, (Sam) commenced pitching and pitched until he got both of us off, then bolted.  We got home here about eleven o’clock to-night.  No account of the McLane  Buck.

Aug. 2             Soon after dinner, I started over to Mr. Adamie’s, as we did not find the

horse which got away from me last night.  I came round by the Puerta for the Mail but heard no tale of either the Buck or Horse.

Aug. 3             Monico started the flocks over to a Waterhole near the Roseate’s.  I

intended to go and seek the Buck.  Willie had already got the horse over from Adams.  Before I got started, Geronimo came with the buck.  He said that he came to the Pastoreo last night.  Mr. Smith had just got here when the buck was brought.  Lizzie bought goods to the amount of $28.40.  He gave us cash to the amount of $3000 and left $10000 with us so I gave him an order on Mr. Headen to be for $13000.

Aug. 4             I worked all day at the gutters on front of the house.  Jesus Alanis came

today with a note from Don Calixto Tovar .  He has engaged Jesus and will pay the a/c to Mr. James O. Luby.  We are making preparation to start with the flocks to the Precenios.  The flocks started for the Presinos on the 5th.  I finished the gutters with the help of Vidal, after which Vidal started with the Wagon after the flocks.  Soon after that I started and went right over to the Presinios and found Vidal there with the Wagon.  But neither he nor I have seen the flocks, so we camped about a mile and a half from the Presinios.  When we started the next morning (6th) Vidal saw one of the flocks a little way behind us.  So we turned and met them and came on to the Presinos.  Watered the flock and went out to two hackberry trees and camped there.  The shepherd, Osemi said he would leave in three days.  So on Saturday evening, the 7th, I came home and started very early on Sunday morning for San Diego.  I engaged a Shepherd called Refugio Padillo but he could not come until Tuesday.  It was very late last night when I got home and found that Osieme did not care to leave.

Aug. 11           I left camps yesterday with Wagon for San Diego to bring the Shepherd I

engaged on Sunday.  Osieme was sick so I took him up with me in the Wagon.  He engaged D. Jeffries to cure him for ten (10) dollars which Mr.

Luby  paid him and charged to me.  Osieme also got four (4) dollars after a deal of bother with Refugio.  I got him into the Wagon.  We left San Diego a little before Sundown and got to Camps very late last night.  This morning, Refugio took the large Manada.

Aug. 18           (Sunday)  On Friday 13th, we started the flocks from the Precinos and

camped with them on the Roseata’s.  On Saturday morning, watered the flocks at the Puerto the Agua Dulce and got them to the Leona Motts at night, where Willie put 28 Bucks and 1 Wedder to the Pastores.  Said buck and Wedder being branded with the tar Brand.  I intend going back to them this evening.  On the day we left the Precinos, Juan Antonio came to seek work.  I engaged him and his uncle.  They are to come to-morrow.

Aug. 22           (Sunday)  Juan Antonio and his Uncle came to the Ranche last Monday

evening. On Tuesday evening, I took them down to Camps. On Wednesday morning, Braharis’ flock was taken to Mr. Adamies pen.
