Obituary of Irene E. Berry
DIED
BERRY- In Corpus Christi, Tex. July 10, 1888 at 5:30 a.m. of pleurisy of the heart, Mrs. Irene E. Berry, wife of the late Capt. H. W. Berry in the sixty eighth year of her age. Another land mark of Corpus Christi has been removed in the death of the well known and venerable mother on Tuesday at an early hour when in her bed came the summons less than fifteen minutes from when she awoke and aroused her daughter, Hettie, her spirit had fled to him _______ and who doth all things for the good. Mrs. Berry was born in _________, South Carolina, February 26, 1820. On January 19, 1836 at Independence, Washington county, Texas she was married to Mr. John A. F. Gravis. In 1840 they moved to Houston, thence to Austin, and in the spring of 1845 when Taylor’s rincon, the family moved to Corpus Christi, where Mr. Gravis died _______ 17, 1855. In 1856 the widow married the later Capt. H. W. Berry whose life was chronicled in these columns only a few weeks ago. Mrs. Berry was the mother of eleven all grown children all living, six sons and five daughters. She also has three grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The deceased has been a resident of Corpus Christi for forty three years, having come to the place when it was a mere ranch. Her funeral which took place Wednesday was largely attended and was observed by the closing of most business houses during the sad procession. All the absent relatives who could come here in time to attend the funeral arrived on Tuesday night, namely: F. C. _____ family, Miss Gertrude Gravis, Mrs. ________ Da Camara and family from San Diego, H. Berry, Beeville; Mrs. Geo. _________ and her two daughters and son, Mrs. ______ Pfeuffer and family, of New Braunsfels and Mrs. Dr. A. Garwood, of Bastrop. The stricken family have the heart felt sympathies of the entire community in their sore affliction.
