Biography
While Ellis Dority has no gravestone to give information, the records of interment of the Bay View Cemetery Association indicate that he died on or about December 13, 1897 of a gunshot wound at the age of 32 years, 3 months, and 21 days (thus born about August 22, 1865). He is listed as a native of Sedgewick, Maine where there are many Dority buried in the Sedgewick Rural Cemetery. Most likely he is a relative of Bernard/Benjamin P. Dority (born circa 1840) who married Helen De Avalon on September 14, 1873 (Nueces County Marriage Records, vol. D page 65). B. P. Dority was buried in New Bayview Cemetery after his death on August 14, 1910. B. P. Dority also is listed in census records as from Maine (as well as his parents). While B. P. Dority is buried in New Bayview Cemetery, his wife, Helen, is buried in Old Bayview Cemetery along with her parents. The early death records of the city of Corpus Christi list Ellis as "Ellis C. (not E.) Dority". This record, like the interment record, lists him as a 32 year old native of Maine who died of gunshot (Early Death Records at Vital Statistics Office, page 104 #1541). A record submitted by Don Brownlee to the Nueces County GenWeb page notes the following article from the "Dallas Morning News" of 15 December 1897 from page 4—
Corpus Christi, Nueces Co., Tx. Dec. 14—Ellis Dority, who was shot yesterday
by Ed Oliver, died last night and was buried today. Circumstances prove that the
killing was done in self-defense.
