It is with much sorrow we chronicle the death of Mrs. Mary Grant, wife of Capt. James Grant, which occurred in this city, Sunday, Feb. 23, 1899, at 12:45 a.m., at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Andrew Anderson, after a long and painful illness.  Deceased was 69 years of age; a native of New Orleans, but has resided on Mustang Island for many years, until the past few months, when she came to this city to be under the doctor’s care.  Besides a devoted husband, she leaves two daughters, Mrs. Andrew Anderson and Miss Maggie Grant, and four sons – William, James, John, and Edward to mourn her loss.  She was laid to rest in the Bay View Cemetery at 3:30 p.m. the same day.  The funeral services were performed by Rev. J. H. Linn.

The pall bearers were Messrs. E. T. Merriman, Max Luther, H. S. Alexander, John Hull, Hugh Sutherland, Cheston Heath.  Mrs. Grant was a woman beloved for her kindness of heart, her generosity, and warmth of character.  She died surrounded by the loving and tender care of husband and children.  She sweetly and patiently bore the suffering of sickness and at the end peacefully fell asleep, leaving the memory of her pure gentle life to rest like a benediction ever in the hearts of her loved ones.  Her passing away has left a void that nothing can fill – a  broken link in the chain of family affection that can never be riveted, except at (unable to read) prepared for those who love and serve the Lord.
