1. Obituary

A well Known and Most Estimable Lady Passes Away.  At the residence of her son, Chas. H. Gregory, in this city last Saturday morning at 7 o’clock, Mrs. L. J. Gregory passed peacefully to the beautiful and of rest beyond the star light dome of the skies.

Mrs. Gregory was the widow of Dr. J. J. Gregory, who died in Corpus Christi in 1882.  He was a native of Georgia and moved from that state to Milam county with her husband in 1867, residing there until 1879, when the family moved to Corpus Christi.  She was the mother of eight children, six of whom survive her.  There are Chas. II, John Jr., and H. F. Gregory of Beeville, W. H. Gregory of Bell county, Robt. L. Gregory of Toronto, Canada, and Mrs. H. E. Juter of Corpus Christi.  Besides these she leaves twenty-six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

At the time of her death Mrs. Gregory was in her 64th year.  She had been a consistent member of the Methodist church almost from childhood.

Her remains, accompanied by a number of near and dear relatives, were taken to Corpus Christi Saturday evening and interred in the city cemetery at that place Sunday morning at 9 o’clock.  The funeral took place from the Methodist church, and was under the direction of the Corpus Christi Lodge Knights and Ladies of Honor, of where she was a charter member.

2. Biography

Died, in Beeville, Texas, August 5, 1899, at 7 a.m., Mrs. Laura J. Gregory, a native of Georgia.

The sad news of the death of this estimable lady and mother was received in this city with some surprise by most of her acquaintances and friends, who, while they were aware that she had been in bad healthy for some time, were not expecting her death so soon.  Mrs. Gregory, whose maiden name was Laura J. Lucas, was born in Athens, Ga., May 10, 1835.  She was first married to Russell J. Hunt, who died not very long afterwards.  From their union one child was born—Mrs. Eva Martin, now deceased.  On April 23, 1857, the subject of this sketch married Dr. J. J. Gregory, in Athens, Ga., and ten years later, in 1857 (note: either they married in 1857 and moved in 1867 or they married in 1847 and moved in 1857 for a ten year interval), they moved to Milam county, Texas from which place they came to Corpus Christi in May, 1879, where Mrs. Gregory resided up to the time of her demise, her husband dying in this city a few years after coming here.  Mrs. Gregory leaves to mourn her loss five sons and one daughter, viz: Chas. H., John J., B. T., Wm. H. Gregory of Beeville; Robt. L. Gregory, of Toronto, Canada, and Mrs. H. E. Luter, of Corpus Christi.  The remains of the deceased were brought to this city last Saturday and interred by the side of those of her husband, the funeral taking place Sunday morning from the Methodist church, of which denomination deceased had been a member almost from childhood.  The CALLER joins many friends both here and in Beeville in extending the bereaved relatives much sympathy in the sad and irreparable loss.
