NO HEADSTONE

Speculation

Unfortunately there is no stone to mark this grave and verify name and vital record dates. The only reference to this burial is in the Fred Hay survey so that may mean a stone did once exist. This survey states that the birth of Mr. Henry was March 9, 1850 and that he died on August 25, 1909. However, there is no further evidence to offer leads as to this person's identity at this time. There are no extant copies of the local papers from that time so no obit could be obtained. There is no record of the death of a Charles Henry in 1909 in the Texas index of death records to testify to the county of death. There is no listing of the interment of any Charles Henry in the records of interment of the Bayview Association which does cover the period of 1909. This may mean that dates are incorrect as found in the Fred Hay survey or that some other discrepancy led to the absence of any record in the interment files and the Texas index. Finally, there is no "Charles Henry" in the 1910 Texas census soundex that fits as a match for the dates given in the Hay survey. The largest Henry family in Corpus Christi proper at that time (1909) was part of the Jewish community, but there is no Charles Henry among those family members nor is one found in the city directory of 1908. There is also a Henry family in San Patricio County in later years, but none indicate Charles Henry as a member in their presently known records (see for instance the death of Mrs. C. L. Henry in Nueces County in 1930 and the death of Mrs. C. F. Henry in San Patricio County in 1937). There is a Charles Henry of Bexar County who was born about 1850, but there is no indication that he ever moved to Corpus Christi. This gentleman was a member of the African-American community and was a day-laborer. There was also a Charles C. Henry who married in 1883 in Gonzalez, Texas to Sarah Elizabeth Wells (daughter of Walker Wells and Sarah W. Wright). However, again it is unknown if this family ever resided in the Corpus Christi area at the time of the death of the Charles Henry who is listed as buried in Old Bayview Cemetery.
