Biography

Georgina Holbein

(6 October 1865 to 12 July 1868)

This small child is the sister of Lillian Augusta and Frances Rebecca, the Holbein sisters who drowned accidentally on St. Joseph's Island in August of 1874).  Georgina is the daughter of Reuben Holbein (1826-1888) and Sarah Hobbs (1836-1919).  Georgina's father was a native of London who immigrated to Texas in 1846 and worked as agent of Henry L. Kinney to bring British families to the Corpus Christi area.  He was a member of the city council, a mayor of the city, and a county clerk for Nueces County.  During the Civil War he managed several cotton trains for Richard King and subsequently helped manage the King Ranch after King's death.  Little Georgina would have lived in those turbulent times after the Civil War when her parents would have known some security thanks to their connections to the King Ranch.  Georgina's mother Sarah Hobbs (a native of Sommersetshire, England) had married Reuben on April 13, 1857.  In the 1900 census records of Nueces County, Sarah Hobbs-Holbein reports that she had lost 3 children of the 7 that she originally had.  This would signify Lillian Augusta, Frances Rebecca, and Georgina.  With the death of little Georgina and her two sisters who drowned, Reuben and Sarah lost all of their girls young and were survived only by sons.  However, Reuben and Sarah sleep with these three girls at Old Bayview Cemetery, while their four sons are all buried elsewhere.
