Obituary

Sarah Hobbs Holbein

Pioneer Corpus Christian Passes Away Christmas

Mrs. Sarah Holbein, for sixty-seven years a resident of Corpus Christi and Nueces County, died suddenly at her home on Antelope street at 8:30 o'clock Christmas morning.  Mrs. Holbein had been in fairly good health up to the hour of her death which was caused by the inroads of age.

Born in Sommersetshire, England, March 13, 1836, Mrs. Holbein, then Miss Sarah Hobbs, came to Corpus Christi in 1852 as a member of a family of seven.  There were among the first to settle here and Mrs. Holbein has been an active part in the growth and history of the city.  She had lived in Corpus Christi or Nueces ever since first coming here.

She was married to Reuben Holbein a few years after coming from England.  Mrs. Holbein was a charter member of the Dorcas society and of the Church of the Good Shepherd.  She was a life-long member of the church and was one of the most faithful workers among the Episcopalians in the city.

She is survived by four sons, W. F. Holbein, Richard K. Holbein, a ranchman of South Texas; John Holbein of Alice, a niece, Miss Maud Morgan, who made her home with Mrs. Holbein, and a sister, Mrs. P. B. Beynon of Corpus Christi.

Two of her sons, John and Richard, were with her when, the end came. Reuben Holbein and his wife drove in from Alice yesterday as soon as informed of her death.

Funeral services will be held from the residence, 619 Antelope Street, at the Church of the Good Shepherd at 3:30 o'clock.  The Rev. Dr. J. W. Sykes will be in charge.  Burial will be made in the old Bay View cemetery, by the side of her husband.
