Biographical Information

The tombstone of Mattie Howell Jacobs, an infant buried in Old Bayview, indicates that she is the daughter of J. R. and N. C. Jacobs. These initials indicate her parents are Rev. J. R. Jacobs and Nannie Caldwell Jacobs. Howell is a family of Mrs. Caldwell's ancestors. A brief announcement of J. R. Jacobs' death in the Corpus Christi Caller give the following information related to Mattie's father: The Rev. J. R. Jacobs, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Corpus Christi, during the years 1869-1884, died on May 23 at Marfa, after an illness of several months, according to word received here Saturday. The Rev. Mr. Jacobs was born Aug. ---, 1850, and became pastor here when he was 19 years of age, holding the place for 15 years. In 1881 he was married to Miss Nannie Caldwell of this city, daughter of the Rev. W. E. Caldwell, pastor here during the years 1872- 1876. She is a sister of the four Caldwell brothers of this city. Surviving the Rev. Mr. Jacobs are his wife, one daughter, Bessie Jacobs; two sons, Major J. Ripley Jacobs of St. John's College, Manlius, N. Y.; and J. Sperry Jacobs of Marian, Ohio.
