2.  Biography

According to Kaler oral family history Mary Ann Tinsley was born 19 March 1837 in Ohio.  She married Frederick Henry Kaler on 11 March 1856.  They lived in Wisconsin where their first two children were born.  The family subsequently moved to the Ingleside/Aransas Pass area of Texas in 1859.  They are recorded in the 1860 census of Refugio County, Texas (Aransas Precinct) under the name of F. Kalor (1860, Refugio County, p. 130).  Mary had seven children in all.   While living in Refugio/Aransas County, Mary took care of the family while Fred served with the 8th Texas Regiment, CSA during the Civil War.  In 1870 the family is recorded again in Refugio County where Frederick is an engineer in the packery (1870, Refugio County p. 162).  In that census Mary acknowledges she is from Ohio and that the oldest child still at home (12 years old) is from Wisconsin.  All the other children are natives of Texas (10 years old Eva, 7 years old Henry, 5 years old Elinora, and 1 year old Charles).  The family moved to Nueces County about 1875 where their last two children were born.  The family is listed in the 1880 Federal census of Nueces County under "Fredk Kallar" (1880, Nueces County, page 43).  Descendent Nelda Sue Kaler Kelley believes that Mary Ann Tinsley Kaler was a charter member of the Baptist Church in Corpus Christi.  Mary's date of death is not presently definitively known.  However, records do indicate she is buried in Old Bayview Cemetery along with her son William Elmer Kaler (1866-1877).
