1. Obituary
Death of Mr. S. S. Lewis
Mr. S. S. Lewis, an aged citizen, died at his home 3-1/2 miles west of town Friday night, July 7, 1893, at half past 11 o’clock. He had been unwell for six weeks.
The funeral of the late Mr. S. S. Lewis took place Sunday morning from the Methodist church where at 9 o’clock the Rev. Mrs. Webb delivered a very appropriate sermon of the life of the deceased. At its close the Knights of Honor, of which order the deceases was a most worthy member, took charge of the remains and the procession proceeded to the city cemetery where the Knights conducted their beautiful burial service. Mr. Lewis, who was at the time of his death, aged 64 years, 4 months and 18 days, was a most excellent gentleman and a man of enterprise. Several years ago he was a member of the firm of Lewis & Whitehead of Indianapolis, one of the wealthy firms of that city. Asthma caused him to leave Indianapolis and come south. For some years he resided near Austin, settling at last in Nueces county near this city, where in 1892 he built a very handsome residence.

Beautifying the Graveyards
Mr. R. Joseph has just returned from Laredo and San Diego where he has been erecting monuments and iron fences. In the last named place he put up a fine fence and monument for the late Theodore Weidenmueller. In this city he has filled several orders, among them a monument and fence for Mrs. Dr. Lawrence over the graves of her husband, son and daughter. He has also erected a beautiful iron fence around the grave of the late Mr. S. S. Lewis.
