Biography
This infant (born and died in 1876) is listed on her tombstone as the first born (First Fruits from Rev. XIV: 4) of John R. and Charlotte W. Mahone. It would seem this couple is John R. Mahone and Charlotte Wagner who married in Harrison County, Texas on August 3, 1875 (Marshall New Messenger of 5 August 1875). The couple was married in the Trinity Episcopal Church by Rev. E. A. Wagner (presumably Charlotte’s relative). It is unclear why they were in Corpus Christi for the short period when little Marie was born and died because most of their vital statistics point to a life in Harrison County. The couple lost another little girl, Carrie, who is listed as their second daughter and aged four when she died September 26, 1883 (Marshall New Messenger, 27 September 1883). At that time the newspaper notes that the family was residing at the Capitol Hotel where the child died of a congestive chill. This child was buried at the Marshall cemetery. Charlotte herself died and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery December 3, 1891 (in Sec. 3, Lot 204). John later married Susie Scott Kretz (Harrison County, Texas) on 9 November 1894. When he died on February 21, 1906, the announcement of his death noted that he was born in Marshall on September 16, 1848. His obit states that his father, John R. Mahone (Sr.), died before the war and his mother, Mrs. Martha King, survived her son. John R. was also survived by a sister, Mrs. Julian C. Hall of Louisville, Kentucky, and by two daughters and four sons (Marshall News Messenger of 21 February 1906).
