Biography

This "Miss E. Maltby" is Imogene "Emma" Maltby who was born in early 1880 according to most accounts. In the 1880 census she is listed as "Imogen" and is only 6 months old. She was a daughter of William Henderson Maltby (also buried in Old Bayview Cemetery) and his second wife, Anna M. Headen. W. H. Maltby initially married Mary Grace Swift, and the older children Mary and Jasper are hers. After their father's death, William Headen was initially their guardian. However, within the year their maternal grandmother Susan Gray Swift Wyatt asked and received guardianship over her grandchildren. William H. Maltby's second wife, Anna Headen, was born in Ireland and came with William and Margaret Headen to Texas about 1867 according to the 1900 census (Nueces County E. D. sheet 11/page 131A). Her father and mother are also probably buried in Old Bayview although that had not been verified prior to the establishment of this website. Little Imogene appears to be the last of the children born to William H. Maltby. He was a newspaper publisher, connected with his brother H. A. Maltby in the publication of the "Ranchero" at the beginning of the Civil War. He left to serve in Neal's local artillery company for the Confederacy. During the war they sought to guard the passes into Corpus Christi Bay, and they were captured by Federal forces at their barrier island fort. W. H. Maltby also was involved in the publication of "The Advertiser" and "The Free Press" (in connection with local newspaperman Eli T. Merriman) until his death in 1880 only months after Imogene's birth. Mr. Merriman sold that paper to the Caller Publishing Company in 1883 and with stock in their company he began to work for the new Corpus Christi Caller. In the 1900 census, the Maltbys (mother Anna and daughters Lucy and Emma) live right next door to the Merriman family. In that census Imogene is listed as "Emma" and gives her birthday as November of 1880. However, that cannot be correct since she is listed in the 1880 census as 6 months old, and that census was taken in the summer prior to the death of her father in August of 1880. In the 1900 census Lucy gives her birth as January of 1878 which is possible, and mother Anna lists her birth as August of 1847. It appears that Anna M. Headen-Maltby outlived most of her children. A record of Anna H. Maltby (widow of W. H. Maltby) is found as late as 1916 when she is residing at 509 Water Street. It seems likely that she either died near that time or more likely went to live with other relatives, possibly her daughter Anna Margaret and her stepdaughter Mary who were known to have gone to Los Angeles. Imogene "Emma" Maltby was a practicing member of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, and the notation of her death and burial is found in the parish death records. The early records of the Bay View Association state that she died February 12, 1910 and was buried near her father, sister Lucy, and stepmother Mary Grace Maltby.
