Death of James McKenzie

A sad and fatal accident occurred in this city about 6 o'clock last Tuesday evening.  Mr. James McKenzie, in endeavoring to enter the street car in front of the telephone office on Chaparral street, fell in front of the car wheels and almost instantly was crushed and terribly mangled, having his ribs and arm broken and hurt otherwise in the side, and his head bruised. He was taken to his home as soon as possible and everything done to save his life, but all in vain.  He died at 7 p.m., an hour after the accident.

Mr. McKenzie was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and was aged 49 years and 7

months: came to Corpus Christi during the war with Capt. Ireland's company.  In 1865 he married Miss Kate Rankin of this city, since which time Corpus Christi has been his home.  He was a splendid house and sign painter, which trade he followed up to the time of his death. Mr. McKenzie was well known here and popular with the people, always sociable and ready to do an act of charity.  He was a member of the Masonic order, the Knights of Honor lodge and a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen.  The funeral was conducted by the Knights of Honor Wednesday afternoon and was well attended.  Deceased leaves a wife and four daughters and other relatives to mourn his sudden and unexpected death.  The afflicted family have the sympathies of numerous friends. New York and Connecticut papers are requested to please copy.

OBITUARY

In Memory of Jas. McKenzie.

Died-In this city, March 3, 1891, at 7:40 p.m., James McKenzie, aged

forty-nine years and seven months, beloved husband of Kate McKenzie.

Asleep in Jesus' blessed sleep

From which none ever wakes to weep.

A precious one from them has gone,

A voice they loved is stilled;

A place is vacant in their home,

Which never can be filled.

God in His wisdom has recalled,

The boom his love has given;

And though the body slumber's here,

The soul is safe in Heaven

Peaceful be thy silent slumber,

Peaceful in thy grave so low;

Thou no more will join our number,

Thou no more our song will know.

Yet again we hope to meet thee,

When the day of life is fled:

And in Heaven with joy to greet thee,

Where no farewell tears are shed.

                                              A Relative
