Obituary of John Mircovich, husband of Adelaida de Flores Mircovich

John Mircovich, better know in the Gulf Coast area as “Two Brothers,†died of a heart attack at his home, 324 Waco, early Sunday mourning.  He was stricken at about 5:30 a.m., and the fire department inhalator squad worked unsuccessfully for almost an hour to revive him.

Mircovich was born June 4, 1857 in Long Island, Yugoslavia.  He came to the United States 78 years ago and to Corpus Christi 10 years later.

With his brother, Mateo, he built a fishing schooner in 1884, the  “Two Brothers,†and John and Mateo became known as the “Two Fishing Brothers from Yugoslavia.†  A fish market at Ingleside, also was named “Two Brothers,†and John retained that as a nickname after Mateo’s death.

John Mircovich built a second fish market on North Chaparral, where the Firestone Tire Co. is now located.  In 1889 he built the Bay Saloon and Restaurant, and became famous in this area for his cooking.  Fishermen and other patrons often bought his macaroni soup, fish and oyster chowder and Italian beans to take home.  He later built the Bay Grocery on Water Street.

During the depression of 1893, Mircovich opened his home to boarders, charging $3 a week for room and board.  He headed a drive to provide clothing for indigents, many of whom found shelter in his home.

The storm of 1919 destroyed his home, grocery and restaurant, and Mircovich rebuilt his home and the grocery at the Waco Street address, where the grocery is till operated under the name of Bay Grocery.  He has other property holdings here and in Ingleside and Beeville.

Soon after his arrival in Corpus Christi, Mircovich married Miss Adela Flores.  Of their four children, Mrs. Angelita Guiterrez of Corpus Christi is the only survivor.  After Mrs. Mircovich’s death, he was married in 1903 to Miss Francisca Gonzalez.  Their five sons, John Jr., Simon, Dan, Arnold and Rudolph all live in Corpus Christi.  The second Mrs. Mircovich died several years ago.

Other survivors include a brother, Sam, and a sister, Miss Catalina Mircovich, both of Long Island, Yugoslavia; a cousin Joe Mircovich of Ingleside; eight grandchildren, three great-grand children and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at Corpus Christi Cathedral, with the Most Rev. John F. Basso officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, under direction of Dunne funeral Home, Six nephews will be pall bearers, and honorary pallbearers will be friends of the family.  Requiem funeral mass will be said at 8 a.m. Tuesday at the Cathedral.
