PROF. J. D. MEREDITH
An Old-Time Instructor of Corpus Christi Passes Away.
Died, at his home in Corpus Christi, Texas, Wednesday morning, August 23, 1905 at 2 o'clock, J. D. MEREDITH, a native of Virginia, aged 75 years, 11 months and 28 days. Prof. Meredith's death was unexpected to most of his friends, though he had been in poor health for some time, the last week or two, very ill. Tuesday morning just before day Mr. Meredith called his wife to his bedside and said, "Mrs. Meredith, you ask me about every three days how I feel, if I feel I'm going to get well. I thought that was understood long ago between us, that we felt God by His Holy Spirit, directs our every step. I have never had a fear; I feel I am going to get well, but trust it all to God." Prof. Meredith came to Corpus Christi in 1877, establishing here the Corpus Christi Female College which he conducted up to the time of his death. During the 28 years he taught many of the children of this city and section, at one time having a most flourishing school. He made many friends in this section who are sorry now to hear of his death. He leaves besides his bereaved widow, one son, John Calvin Meredith, of San Antonio The funeral took place Wednesday evening at 5 o'clock, from the C. C. female College building, conducted by the Rev. Mr. Springall, of Ennis Presbyterian church, assisted by Rev. D. B. South; interment in the old Bay View cemetery.

Rev. John Dabney Meredith died in this city on Wednesday morning, August 23, 1905, in the seventy-sixth year of his useful life. He was born in Buckingham County, Va., on September 18, 1829 and came to Texas when in the prime of life. For twenty-eight years Corpus Christi was his home and the memory of his busy days as a Christian educator will long be a proud heritage of the community. His life was a happy exemplification of the verity of that promise which was his favorite verse in the Bible. They will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee because he trusteth in Thee. He was a graduate of Hampden Sidney college, where he became tutor of Greek and mathematics, and also obtained his A. M. degree in the University of Virginia. He graduated from the Theological college at Danville, and preached the Gospel at various places. He afterwards secured license to practice law in San Antonio. But his great work was as a teacher. In this field, assisted by the wife who now mourns his loss, he effected incalculable good upon his day and time.
