Obituary

Death of an Old Citizen After a Long Illness  -- Funeral Largely Attended

After a long illness, borne with great patience and fortitude, Mr. ANTON MEULY died at his reside in this city, Wednesday morning, May 10, 1899, at the advanced age of 86 years.

Mr. Meuly was a native of Suffers, Canton Graubunton, Switzerland, where he was born on July 13, 1813, and which home he left at the age of 18, to go to Italy, where he remained until 1854.  In this year he came to America, landing at Galveston, Texas, and from there went to Missouri and California, where he engaged in the mining business, remaining there several years.

In the latter part of the year, 1868, he came to Corpus Christi, where he and Mr. John Uehlinger engaged in the grocery and bakery business, and from which he retired in 1882.  The old gentleman having acquired quite a little fortune, never entered business again.  He died possessed of some quite valuable property, the house now occupied by Mrs. Robertson belong to him.

He was a brother of the late Conrad Meuly, who died in Brownsville in July, 1865, and leaves many relatives here and in Switzerland to mourn his death.  The funeral took place Thursday morning at 10 o’clock, and was largely attended, the services being conducted by Rev. S. E. Chandler.  To the family, the Caller offers its sincere sympathy in their loss.
