Biography

Ellen is one of the older daughters listed with Henry and Fannie Newman in the 1870 census (p. 169).  The family is African-American, and the parents are listed as quite elderly in this census.  This may be a mistake since Fannie is listed as 78 years old in the 1870 census and then 60 years old in the 1880 census.  Ellen only appears in the 1870 census with the family.  In this census she is listed as 16 years old and a native of Texas.  Marriage Records of Nueces County (volume C) report a marriage license issued at the end of December of 1870 for Ellen Newman and Sanders Hicks.  Julia Hicks who is also buried in Old Bayview Cemetery initially married E. M. Mack (1879) and subsequently married Nathaniel Brown (1885).  She is buried under the name "Julia Brown".  If Ellen Newman who is buried with Samuel and Julia Newman is the same Ellen who married Sanders Hicks, then she may have returned to her maiden name prior to her death or the family may simply have chosen to list her under her maiden name so her relationship to them would be more obvious.  The side of the marker on which Ellen's name appears also lists her brother "S. Newman" and her younger sister "Julia Newman" to indicate their status as siblings.  There are no dates of birth or death given for any of these names on the gravestone.  Only the family members' initials appear on their footstones.
