Corpus Christi Loses Another Old and Well Known Citizen
Died, in this city, Tuesday, March 28, 1899, at 10:15 p.m., SAMUEL F. STEVENSON, a native of St. Pancras parish, London, England, aged 72 years, 10 months and 10 days.
By the death of Mr. Stevenson, which for some time had been daily expected, another old and much respected citizen has been removed from our midst, one who for forty-two years had been a resident of Nueces county.
Mr. Stevenson, who was born May 18, 1826, in the mother country, and who was educated at Oxford and Paris, came to New York in 1846, engaging in merchandising there until the fall of the following year. In 1857 he came to Corpus Christi, living here and in the surrounding country up to the time of his death, being engaged most of the time in upholstering and cabinet-making. He was married in this city March 20, 1872, to Miss Eliza Allen, who preceded him to the world beyond a number of years ago. Mr. Stevenson was a kind father and loved to stay at home, going about among the people only where he had business. He was a most excellent citizen and one commanding the respect of everyone who knew him.
His funeral, which was a very large one, took place Wednesday evening at 4:30 from the Episcopal Church of which he was a member. The following gentlemen acted as pall-bearers: Messrs. Sam Shoemaker, Sam Rankin, Jas. W. Ward, Thos. Allen, Wm. Biggio and H. R. Sutherland, Sr.
Deceased leaves not mourn his loss two sons and one daughter, Messrs. Alexander and Henry Stevenson and Miss Annie Stevenson who have the sympathies of a host of friends in their bereavement.

Listings for Old Bayview Cemetery by Dr. Charles A. Ward and Mr. Brooks Noel also include a "John" and "Mortie" Stevenson. It seems most likely that these may be relatives (probably children) of Samuel F. Stevenson and his wife Eliza Allen. They may have never had stones or those stones may be among the ones lost over the years. It also seems most likely that Samuel's wife, Eliza Allen Stevenson, who preceded her husband in death by about 2 years, is also buried in Old Bayview. It would have been highly out of the ordinary for Samuel himself to be the first buried there while his wife was buried elsewhere. Moreover, since the stone for his son Henry F. Stevenson (died 1912) is also in Old Bayview, it could be that Eliza's stone also had any young children (as John and Mortie may have been) listed on it. The loss of that stone would explain the absence of that record of the dates of Eliza, John, and Mortie.
