Andrew Thayer, a native of Buffalo, N. Y., died in Corpus Christi last Sunday, Nov. 13th, 1887, at 5 p.m., aged about 75 years. Capt. Thayer came to this city in 1878, with $10 in money, it is said, and a stock of pictures. He opened a small store on the bluff, but afterwards moved down into the business portion of town. He had no family and seemed to care little to cultivate acquaintances, preferring to remain by his business. The deceased was an old sea captain and had seen much of the world, having traveled a great deal in his day, especially in foreign waters. His last words to Frank Clark who seemed to be his main stay in sickness, was: "I wish you would change the bell on the door, and put it on the starboard side, also put a new string on it, as I expect to land in New York to-night and let my crew go ashore." The Captain was conscious up to a few minutes of his death. His stock of goods is not thought to be worth much over $1,000. Mr. Julius Henry who has been inventorying the stock and straightening up the business the past few days, has written or telegraphed to a brother of the deceased in Los Angeles, Cal., and also to a brother in Kansas.
