Biography
This little one is simply identified as a "child of Frank Thompson" who died 17 October 1911. This is the way the death and burial are recorded in the early records of the Bay View Cemetery Association which cover a period roughly from January of 1897 to the November of 1913 (the abstract of the records can be found in "Reflections", volume 20, Number 3, September 1984, pp. 53-56). Frank Thompson is the son of Charles and Mary A. Thompson. Mary's burial in Old Bayview is verified. Buried also in Old Bayview Cemetery is Mary's son by an earlier marriage, Charles Land. Charles is a half- brother to Frank and William Thompson who are specifically mentioned in the obituary of Charles Land (C. C. Caller of 25 April 1931). The paternal grandmother of this child, Mary Ann Thompson was born 25 February 1829 and died 14 March 1890. She was from England or the English territory of Nassau, Bahamas according to census records, and her husband Charles (paternal grandfather of this child) was from Denmark. Present records do not indicate if Mary's husband Charles is also buried in Old Bayview Cemetery or not. Their son Frank was born about 1869 according to the 1870 census (p. 161) and was living with his parents on Carancahua Street in the 1880 census (p. 17B). Frank and William's half¬-brother Charles Land was living at 618 N. Carrizo street when he died in 1931, and Frank and his wife Rose were living at that same address when their son Frank, Jr. died in 1935 (and was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery). However, by the time that another of their sons, George, died in December of 1935 the family was living in San Antonio. It appears that Frank married Rose out of this area as there is no record of their wedding nor are they found in Nueces County in the 1900 census records. However, there does seem to be a clue as to the identity of this child. In the 1910 census record of Nueces County (p. 115B) Frank and Rosa are listed with six children. Their youngest child is a son named John who is only 2 years old (a year younger than his brother Frank, Jr.). By the 1920 census of Nueces County (Vol. 133, E.D. 183, sheet 7, line 57) Frank, Jr. is now the youngest in the family. He is listed as 12 years old, and there is no listing of John who would have been a year younger than Frank, Jr. Thus it would seem that the child of Frank Thompson who died in 1911 was little John who would have been between 2 and 3 years old. Losing John in 1911 and then Frank, Jr. and George in 1935-Frank and Rosa Thompson moved to San Antonio with only one surviving son, Charles Thompson (the second oldest son). However, three daughters would have been around to give them a sense of family and provide further descendents-Mary, Rosa, and Anita. Meanwhile little John rests in Old Bayview Cemetery near his grandmother Mary A. Thompson and his uncle Charles Land. And the remains of John's brothers Frank Jr. and George rest beside one another in Rose Hill Cemetery.
