Biography

The information on Eliza Thompson (no headstone) indicates that she was 15 years old when she died on August 21, 1886 and that her parents were "M. & P. Thompson".  The 1880 census records of Nueces County (p. 19B) report an "Eliza Thompson" who fits that description.  Eliza is listed in 1880 as 11 years old and the daughter of Michael (this should be "Mitchell") and Priscilla Thompson.  Rev. Mitchell Thompson is the minister to the Congregational Church which will also be served by Solomon Coles.  This church was established after the Civil War to serve the African-American community of Corpus Christi.  Mitchell (born about 1835 in South Carolina) and Priscilla (born about 1838 in Virginia) lived with an extended family in 1880 as they also shared their home with their daughter and her husband (Hannah and John J. Paxton) as well the Paxton's son William Ed Paxton.  John J. helped support the family by working as a hotel waiter.  Little Eliza is listed as a native of Texas.  Buried with her in Old Bayview Cemetery is also her nephew Willie Edward Paxton (see his page) and probably his parents, John J. and Hannah B. Paxton.
