  1. Biography

The pillar stone marking the gravesite of Mary Ann Thompson records her birth as 25 February 1829 and her death as 14 March 1890.  The stone also gives testimony to the love between her and her husband Charles.  Mary appears with her husband Charles in the1870 census of Nueces County (p. 161) living near Fr. Jaillet, Sarah Pettigrew, and the John Henderson family.  Her husband Charles is a native of Denmark, and Mary A. Thompson lists her native land as "Nassau".  With them is a son simply named "Charles" in this census.  However, in the 1880 census of Nueces County (p. 17B), Charles is listed as actually "Charles Land" (also buried in Old Bayview Cemetery).  Charles is the son of Mary Ann by a previous marriage.  He says that his father is from Italy and his mother from England.  In this census Mary also lists herself as from England.  It is unclear then whether she was actually born in England and then lived in Nassau, Bahamas (from which she "came" on her journey to America) or whether she was actually born in Nassau and wanted to acknowledge that it was an English territory.  In the 1870 census Charles Thompson and Mary do have a son that is the product of their marriage.  This is "Frank" Thompson (who also has a child buried in Old Bayview Cemetery).  Frank is listed as only 1 year old in 1870 so it may be that his parents married in the late 1860s after the Civil War.  Charles Thompson is reported as a sailor in 1870, but apparently has settled down more by 1880 when he is listed as working in a warehouse.  The family is living on Carancahua Street.  Mary's son Charles Land died at 618 N. Carrizo Street in 1931 at the age of 76 and was buried in the same cemetery as his mother.  Mary Ann Thompson and husband Charles had sons Frank and William who also lived on Carrizo Street.  Frank and his wife Rose were living at 618 N. Carrizo when their son Frank Jr. died in 1935.  However, by December 1935 when their son George died, they were living in San Antonio.  Frank's brother William M. Thompson (a carpenter) had married Maria Rosales in September of 1900, and they were living at 512 N. Carrizo when Maria died in 1928.  Another of Frank's children died in October of 1911 and was also buried in Old Bayview Cemetery.  It appears that this was probably his son John who appears as only 2 years old in 1910 and then does not appear in the 1920 census.  Thus he would have only been about 3 years old when he was laid to rest near his grandmother Mary Ann Thompson in Old Bayview Cemetery.  Present records do not indicate if Mary's husband Charles is also buried in Old Bayview Cemetery.
