Biography
Unfortunately very little has been found on this woman who is buried in Old Bayview. Her tombstone states that she was born on October 3, 1851 and died on December 14, 1911. However, there is not found in the December issues of the local Caller either an obituary of Gerarda or any letter ofthanks from the family for any condolences offered. The Marriage Records ofNueces County do include the record of her marriage to Antonio Torres (also buried in Old Bayview Cemetery). The couple married on December 8, 1895 before J. P. Joseph Dunn (volume F page 353). In early census records of Cameron County (1870, page 130) and Nueces County (1880, page 21B) Antonio's wife is listed as "Josepha" and she appears to be the mother of all his children (six in the 1880). This would thus have been at least the second marriage for both Antonio and Gerarda as their marriage license notes that Antonio Torres married "Mrs. Gerarda Farias". Thus "Farias" is not Gerarda's maiden name. They appear together in the 1900 census ofNueces County (E. D. 133, sheet 12B). They live on Black Street and Antonio is still listed as a "painter" (as also in 1880). In this record Gerarda is listed as born in April of 1854 (rather than October of 1851), and she states that she is a native of Texas whose parents were natives of Mexico. At present (September 2006) research has not yielded any further information on Gerarda, such as the names of any descendents and their whereabouts in the early part of the twentieth century.
