Biography
This young infant is the daughter of August Uehlinger and Mary Ella Uehlinger nee Dreyer. Death records at the Vital Statistics office of Corpus Christi report that Veronica Mary Uehlinger died on December 12, 1894 at only 9 months old and that the cause of death was "hydrocephalus". In present medical terminology this designation indicates an abnormal increase in the amount of cerebrospinal fluid within the cranial cavity that is accompanied by expansion of the cerebral ventricles, enlargement of the skull and atrophy of the brain. Most infant developing this problem would not have had much of a life expectancy in the 1890's.
Little Veronica's mother, Mary Ella Dreyer was born in 1867 and died September 19, 1899. She was buried with other relatives also in Old Bayview such as her brother Theo. Dreyer.
Veronica's father, August Uehlinger, was born in Newnkirch, Switzerland on March 9, 1860 to Jacob Uehlinger and Veronica Rahm so little Veronica was apparently named for her paternal grandmother. August came to America when 12 years old and initially worked as a clerk at the grocery store and bakery owned by John Uehlinger (see 1880 Federal Census of Nueces County). August worked his way up the economic ladder and ultimately was one of 16 men who signed the charter for the Corpus Christi National Bank which was applied for on Sept. 11, 1890. He also figured prominently in the civic life of C. C. serving as School tax collector and assessor, county treasurer of Nueces County, county clerk, and a city commissioner during the administration of Roy Miller. August was preceded in death by his wife Mary Ella Dreyer and daughter Veronica. He died Nov. 1, 1933
