Biography
Vannoy, infant of T.M. and Opal Gilliam
This child died shortly after birth as the dates of birth and death are given as follows: born December 8 and died December 9 of 1930. The child is listed as the infant of T. M. Vannoy and Opal Gilliam. Listed in the 1931 City Directory of Corpus Christi is a "Tom Vannoy" with "Opal" who is living at 2933 Morris Street. Mr. Vannoy is reported as a truck driver for Desel-Boettcher Company. Presumably this is the same person in the 1929 City Directory who is listed as: Thos. Vannoy (with no spouse), driver, Desel-Boettcher Co., home on Coleman Avenue. Also on Coleman Avenue in the 1929 edition of the Directory are C. W. Vannoy and Miss Fannie B. Vannoy. These are apparently living in the original family homestead which later records indicate was 4927 Coleman Street. The father of infant Vannoy (T. M. Vannoy) is in fact the same individual usually listed in official records (and his obit) as "Ton" rather than "Tom" Milton (or Melton) Vannoy. This Ton M. Vannoy died on January 18, 1975 in Nueces County, and his obit notes that he was born in Crowell, Texas (on February 15, 1909) according to social security death records of Texas) and came to the Corpus Christi area about 1915. Among his sisters are "Fannie Bell" (Mrs. George) Doyle of Midland (remember Miss Fannie B. Vannoy on Coleman Avenue in 1929 Directory), Ruby (Mrs. Fred) Corkill, Mrs. Mattie Doyle, and Mrs. O. E. Curry. His brothers include Morris L. Vannoy, Marvin Vannoy, Giles Lee Vannoy, and Bernard Vannoy. The probate records of Ton M. Vannoy state he and "Opal Gillam" (note variation in spelling of her maiden name from records related to infant's death) divorced on or about 10 January 1934 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (Nueces County Probate Records, vol. 532, page 444). On June 28, 1948 T. M. Vannoy married Mrs. Sammie B. Hewett (sic) according to Nueces County Marriage Records, vol. 17, p. 153 so his obituary lists his children as son Harry A. Hewitt and daughter Mrs. Wilbert (Bennie Inez) Durheim of Corpus Christi. It may be that Opal never remarried after the death of the little infant and her separation from T. M. because the social security death records of Texas include an "Opal Vannoy" who was born August 29, 1903 and died in Grayson County, Texas (on the Texas-Oklahoma border) on February 7, 1988.
