NO HEADSTONE
Biography
No information such as birth or death dates, no related parties, and no headstone survive in burial records to give some context to definitively clarify the identity of Henrietta West. However, the 1880 census of Nueces County does list a "Henrietta West" in the residence of widow Mellie Williams. The designations given indicate that Millie is renting rooms to two boarders who are young mulatto women (in their early twenties) who are earning a living by working as laundresses. The other two residents with Ms. Williams are teenagers—Samuel West (15 years old) and Henrietta West (14 years old). Both Samuel and Henrietta say they are natives of Texas, their father was from Kentucky, and their mother was from Maryland. Samuel West is listed as "son" of Mellie Williams, but Henrietta is not given any title to clarify her relationship to Millie. Since Mellie says she is a native of Maryland, it seems most likely that Henrietta is sister of Samuel and daughter of Millie. Henrietta like all five members of this household is listed as "mulatto". In the social system of that time, they are reporting that they are of mixed racial ancestry. Born about 1866 Henrietta must have died fairly young after the 1880 census but before the 1900 census (in which she is not listed) and before marrying.
