1.  Obituary

Fredrika Johanna Weymouth

A Good Woman and Noble Worker Passes Away Unexpectedly

Died, in Corpus Christi, June 7, 1898, at ten minutes past ten a.m., Mrs. FREDERIKA JOHANNA WEYMOUTH, a native of New Orleans, aged 50 years.

A gloom was cast over our little city last Tuesday when the sad and unexpected announcement was sent out that Mrs. Weymouth was dead, a lady so well known and highly esteemed here and who was seen on the streets only a few days before going about attending to her duties.  Mrs. Weymouth was taken sick last Saturday night.  At first nothing serious was apprehended.  On Monday she grew worse and her son John, who was out on the bay, was summoned home.  Everything that medical skill could do was done, but alas! it was of no avail.  The noble woman's work on this earth was finished.  The summons had come and she passed into that long rest which awaits us all.

Mrs. Weymouth came to Corpus Christi in the fall of 1875 from New Orleans, her husband, Mr. James E. Weymouth, having preceded her to this place to take a position in the Vineyard drug store a few months before.  A year or two afterward, Mrs. Weymouth to assist her husband, who had met with reverses, opened a private school, which increased from year to year.  In 1883 she gave up her school and took a position in the public school, which position she held up to the time of her death – fifteen years. – proving herself a most valiant teacher, admired by all her co-laborers in the school.  At the same time she had the care of her family and, of later years, as her children began to grow up, the care of her husband, who has been an invalid, not being able to leave the house for several years.  She was a worthy member of the Knights and Ladies of Honor lodge, in which she carried $3,000 insurance, to be paid upon her death to her three children.  She was also the secretary of the Bay View Cemetery Association proving there also a most faithful worker.  Last, but not least, she was a staunch member of the Episcopal church, the little church she attended so often in this city being packed to its utmost capacity on Wednesday morning last by loving friends to witness the beautiful funeral services conducted by the Rev. A. J. Holworthy, assisted by the vested choir.  The following named young men, all former pupils of Mrs. Weymouth, acted as pall bearers:  W. B. McCampbell, S. J. Lichtenstein, T. D. Ward, Chas. Crossley, H. F. Stevenson, P. S. Rivera.

Mrs. Weymouth will be greatly missed in this community; so kind and generous, so self-sacrificing, so ready to go to attend the sick, or wherever duty called.  She leaves to mourn her, her husband, to sons --- A. E. Weymouth, of Flatonia, and John Weymouth of this city, also one daughter, Miss Edith Weymouth, besides a host of friends and number of relatives, among the latter being Mrs. E. T. Merriman.

5.  "Resolution of Respect," by Aransas Lodge No. 781, Knights and Ladies of Honor.

We, your committee of Aransas Lodge No. 781, Knights and Ladies of Honor, appointed to draft a suitable memorial on the death of our beloved sister, Frederika J. Weymouth, do respectfully submit the following as most appropriate.

Sister Weymouth, a beloved member of our order, whose untimely death has cast a deep gloom over the whole community, was a charter member of Aransas Lodge No. 781, Knights and Ladies of Honor.  She was a constant attendant upon the meetings of the lodge and always took a lively interest in the needs of the order, the relief of the sick, the consolation of the dying and the burial of the dead. Her charity was of that kind which is unseen, the kind of charity which letteth not the right hand know what the left doeth.  A faithful worker, she held the office of treasurer for five years and held at the time of her sudden demise the chair of protector, the greatest honor within the gift of the lodge.  In her public life, as a teacher of our public schools she was honored and beloved by all of her pupils for her kindly motherly heart, filled with love for the little ones committed to her charge, could not but at once engage the affections of these who are saints on earth, our little children.  As a teacher she showed marked ability, transcendent worth and intense activity.  Faithfulness to every trust and unflinching devotion to every duty were her distinguishing characteristics and these kept her for eighteen years at the head of one of our schools.  As a Christian woman she may have been equaled; surpassed, never and all voted her a type of what a woman should be as mother, wife, sister, friend and worker.

She is gone.  No more will her bright smile greet husband, child, pupil or friend.  No more will she adorn our lodge with her virtues.  We bitterly regret her taking away and all Corpus Christi mourns with us.  We, nevertheless, bow to the will of the Great Protector above and tender to Bro. J. E. Weymouth the heartfelt sympathy of every member of this lodge, in this, his great and irreparable loss of a faithful companion and tender ministering angel in his _________ health.

We also tender to her children our deep and sincere condolence in this sad hour for the great chastisement which it has pleased the Divine Protector to visit upon them in the death of their beloved mother.

Resolved, That a copy of this memorial be spread upon the minutes of this lodge, that a copy be furnished the bereaved family and that the memorial be published in our local press.

Respectfully submitted,

R. Joseph,

E. J. Kilmer,

Mrs. F. E. Kilmer,

Mrs. L. C. Anderson,

Mrs. M. A. Sutherland
