NO HEADSTONE

Speculation

There is no stone to mark this grave nor is a "Wood" listed among burial records such as those in the early churches (Good Shepherd, First Presbyterian, First Methodist, First Baptist). There is also no reference to a "Wood" family member in the interment records of the Bayview Cemetery Association. The only source to indicate the burial of such a named person is a map of the cemetery. This map has "Wood" as one of the names written on it, but with no further information. Consequently there is no evidence of whether this person is male or female, adult or child. A first name could indicate the gender and the usual dates of birth and death could give some hint as to the age of this person. There are a number of citizens in early Corpus Christi that bear the family name of Wood. There are also numerous Wood families in the surrounding area that might have buried deceased members in this cemetery because of its proximity. In early county records there is noted the marriage of Richard H. Wood and Carrie E. Howard (Marriage Records, volume C for 27 May 1867). In the same volume is also recorded the marriage of Thomas Wood and Martha Ellen Curry (8 April 1866). The death index of Corpus Christi that is reported in the local paper (Corpus Christi Caller-Times of 14 August 1903 on page 5) reports the death of Julia Wood on 10 August 1903. However, the list of interments kept by the Bayview Cemetery Association jumps from 8 August of 1903 to January of 1904. Finally, the relevant copies of the local Caller and Times are not extant to verify the burial place of Julia Wood. The other numerous residents who bear the Wood family name are the descendents of John Howland Wood who himself resided in St. Mary's on Copano Bay (present Bayside, Texas) for most of his life. However, he did for a time reside in Nueces County, and he died in Rockport, Texas on January 16, 1904. Without more clear evidence it would be difficult to determine which "Wood" this is.
